Questions
A Dog Breeder's Point Of View
Breeders are very concerned about the homes they place their puppies in and therefore may ask the person looking to find a puppy a number of questions. These are just a few of the questions a Breeder may ask prospective pet buyers.
- Do you have a fenced yard?
- Do you plan on attending puppy classes?
- How do you plan on socializing your puppy?
- Do you have a Vet?
- Have you owned this breed before?
- Have you owned a dog before?
- What happened to your previous dog?
- Will there be someone home during the day?
- Where will your puppy stay when you are not there?
- Are there any small children at home?
- What do you know about this breed?
- Why are you interested in this particular breed?
The questions a breeder asks are to help them find qualified homes for the puppies they may produce. Many breeders prefer to build a waiting list and responsibly breed only when they know they will have qualified homes waiting for that special puppy. |
The Puppy Seeker's Point Of View
To help you choose the right breeder it is important to ask the Breeder questions. After all, this is meant to be a long term relationship as most Breeders like to stay in touch with those who purchase their puppies and you, the buyer, will want the support of the Breeder who know their dogs best.
- Do you offer a Guarantee on your puppies?
- Does this dog breed have any health issues?
- What kind of support can I expect?
- Are your puppies Registered with the American Kennel Club/Canadian Kennel Club?
- What does your Guarantee cover?
- What are the expectaions of the Breeder of you?
- Does the Breeder screen their stock for health issues?
Note: In Canada it is illegal, according to Canada's Livestock Pedigree Act, to quote different prices for puppies with and without registration papers.
Most importantly be prepared to wait for your best pal! When you purchase or adopt a puppy or dog it is for the life of the animal and many breeders want to be sure of the homes that their bundles of fur are going to and only breed when they have guaranteed homes waiting.
